Press Release:
COREY BROWN NAMED IL BATTER OF THE WEEK
Chiefs outfielder is fourth Syracuse player with weekly honors in 2011
Syracuse, NY— The International League announced today that Syracuse outfielder Corey Brown and Durham pitcher Matt Moore have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from August 1-7.
Brown is the fourth member of the Chiefs to win an IL weekly award in 2011 (joining Cole Kimball, Michael Aubrey, and Tom Milone) while Moore becomes the fifth Bulls player to be so honored this season (following Alex Torres, Justin Ruggiano, Felipe Lopez, and Brandon Guyer).
Brown hit safely in each of his last five games, posting a .526 average and leading the League for the week with four homers and a 1.211 slugging percentage.
Much of Brown's damage was done Tuesday in Syracuse's 17-2 pounding of the Mud Hens in Toledo. That afternoon Brown collected four hits, including two long balls and a double with 4 RBI. He went deep again on Friday and one more time Saturday (as part of a three-hit night) in Columbus, tying him for the club lead with 13 home runs on the season. He is currently batting .225 (73-324) with 14 doubles, 3 triples, 13 home runs, and 32 RBI for the year.
Brown, 25, was acquired by Washington this past offseason as part of the deal that sent Josh Willingham to Oakland. His first taste of Triple-A came last year with Sacramento, where he hit .193 in 41 games. Brown is a native of Tampa, Florida.
Brown and the Chiefs begin a two-game series tonight against Buffalo at 7:00. Tickets for tonight’s game as well as all other Chiefs games can be purchased in person at the Chiefs ticket office at Alliance Bank Stadium, by calling 315-474-7833, or online at SyracuseChiefs.com.
